St. Joseph, known as the "protector of the holy family", was sought as the intercessor when people in Sicily during the middle ages prayed for the rain that brought an end to drought, producing abundant crops that ended the famine. So, those with Italian heritage, (and those who wish they had) honor St. Joseph with huge banquets, each usually referred to as "St. Joseph's table" (on or near March 19th).
